HOW TO BECOME AN ELECTRICIAN IN KENTUCKY
Kentucky has state licensing for electricians, master electricians and electrical contractors. The first question is which credential fits the work you want to do.
START HERE: Licensing is jurisdiction- and license-type-specific. This guide links to official authorities; confirm current rules before enrolling, applying or contracting.
UNDERSTAND THE THREE LICENSE TYPES
An electrician license is not the same as a master electrician or electrical contractor license. A business seeking an electrical contractor license must have or employ a Kentucky-licensed master electrician. The state Electrical Division administers licensing.
- Electrician: the trade-level credential, with its own examination and documented experience requirements.
- Master electrician: a separate credential with additional experience and examination requirements.
- Electrical contractor: a business-facing license with requirements tied to a licensed master electrician.
EXPERIENCE AND EXAMINATIONS
Kentucky’s Electrical Division application checklist identifies 8,000 hours of electrical trade experience for an electrician license and 16,000 hours for a master electrician license, along with the respective examinations. Certain approved education and apprenticeship pathways can substitute for some experience under applicable rules. Do not assume classroom hours alone qualify you.
- Start documenting qualifying work and supervisors early.
- Check which approved education or apprenticeship credits apply to your application.
- Use the current state checklist and regulations to confirm your precise eligibility before paying for an exam.
HOW TO GET STARTED
If you are new to the trade, investigate registered apprenticeships, employer-sponsored training and technical programs that include supervised electrical work. Ask whether the program helps you document experience recognized by Kentucky. If you already have trade experience, compare your records with the state’s application checklist.
